BSR Show of the Week: Happenings & History

Written by on March 31, 2019

Every week of programming we will be highlighting the Black Squirrel Radio Show of the Week

This week’s show is Happenings & History

Happenings & History is your source for everything Kent! This brand new BSR program is hosted by senior history major Adreanne Foos. Every Sunday from 2-4 pm she discusses the history and culture of Kent State and it’s music scene!

How long have you been with BSR:
My show began in February 2019, but I have been familiar with BSR since 2010, when my band was featured on BSR’s show DIT Radio, hosted by Erin. After that, I always dreamed of becoming a DJ! I graduate in May 2019 and I I am so excited that I got to end my senior year as DJ on BSR!

Describe your show: Happenings & History:
Your Source for Everything Kent!, features current events on and off campus, interviews with Kent alumni, local food and business reviews and segments of Kent State and Kent, OH history.

How did you come up with your show concept:
My show came about for two main reasons: I thought it would be great to have a resource guide for new students on campus, featuring the best places to eat, the best businesses to go to and to also be encouraged when they hear success stories from Kent alumni. I also love history and since it is my major, I wanted to feature different segments about the city of Kent’s history and Kent State’s history on my show.

What do you do in your free time:
In addition to school, I play guitar, piano, ukulele, bass guitar, mandolin harmonica and I sing. I am in a band called Strums & Drums, with my husband Jeff. I also teach music lessons.

Who are some of your favorite bands/artists:
I grew up listening to classic rock bands, like The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues, Neil Diamond, James Gang, and so many more. Classic rock will forever be my favorite genre, but since college, I’ve expanded my musical tastes. If I like what I hear, I’ll listen to it. A few newer bands I like are Greta Van Fleet, the Lumineers and Alabama Shakes.

What are some of your favorite movies:
A few of my favorite movies are Star Wars IV: A New Hope, The Sound of Music, Matilda, Spiderman Homecoming and Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.

What was your favorite show moment:
My favorite show moment was the first time I made BSR’s Top 20.

What is your favorite thing about BSR:
My favorite thing about BSR is getting the chance to experience what it is like to be a DJ!

What should people know about Kent’s musical history:
One of the coolest parts of Kent’s musical history is the fact that Joe Walsh performed at many places on and off campus, and he was a student at Kent. He is one of the best guitar players ever!

Tell us about some of your most notable show guests so far:
I’ve had many notable guests so far on my show. One that I would like to highlight is upcoming. I have been in touch with the May 4 Visitor’s Center on campus and at the end of April, to commemorate May 4, 1970, I will be interviewing an eye witness to the Kent State shootings named Chic Canfora. Chic will be featured on my show on Sunday, April 28 at 3pm.

If you could have any guest (living or dead) on your show who would you want and why:
I would love to interview Joe Walsh on my show! He is a Kent State alumni and musician, and that would be such a cool show if he came on!

Favorite era of history and why:
I love the 1960s/1970s era of history: the music, the clothes and the culture especially.

Tune into Happenings & History only on Black Squirrel Radio!
