BSR Show of the Week: Nocturnal Emissions

Every week of programming we will be highlighting the Black Squirrel Radio Show of the Week

This week’s show is Nocturnal Emissions

Nocturnal Emissions is a late night radio show hosted by BSR Web Director Conor Battles. This veteran program airs every Thursday from Midnight to 2 a.m.!

How long have you been with BSR:
Three long years that I’l never get back; soon to be a fourth.

Describe your show:
Music for a David Lynch shot of headlights shining down a lonely highway.

How did you come up with your show concept:
Adult Swim meets Art Bell meets a really good record collection. The name is a filthy thing that I nicked from a cherished staple of Boston underground radio.

What do you do in your free time:
I watch movies and talk about them for fun and profit. I also know how to read and write, and do both somewhat often.

Who are some of your favorite bands/artists:
Beach House. My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Tom Waits, John Maus, Sun Ra, Pixies, Animal Collective, Elvis Costello

What are some of your favorite movies:
The Red Shoes, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Stop Making Sense, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Robocop, Arsenic and Old Lace

What was your favorite show moment:
I always have a special broadcast at the end of the fall semester with special guests, open phone lines, seasonally appropriate music and merriment galore.

What is your favorite thing about BSR:
BSR is, quite literally, whatever you want it to be. No other outlet here at Kent State affords the same freedoms.

What fictional characters are you most like:
The hacker in Videodrome who shows James Woods the first hacked broadcast. Tom Waits in Down By Law, the guy in Dazed and Confused who gets the shit beat out of him at the moon tower, Paddington Bear.

If you could have any dead celebrities guest host with you who would it be and why:
I would love to have the dearly departed Art Bell, king of the late night mic, take over hosting duties for a night, and to have the other chairs filled by what I like to call the holy trinity of Davids: Bowie, Byrne and Lynch.

What’s the best part of having a late night show:
Isn’t it cool to stay up late?

Tune into Nocturnal Emissions only on Black Squirrel Radio!
