Spring Break is upon us all. The sun is out (unless you’re in Ohio), temperature is up (unless you’re in Ohio) and the semester is more than halfway finished. With that being said, there have also been summer early contenders for song of the summer, and while we aren’t on summer break yet, here are some songs to add to your playlist.
1. Shakira ft. Maluma – “Chantaje”
Okay, truth be told this song actually came out in 2016, but I just discovered it this year. The song is a bop – I don’t speak a lick of Spanish, but honestly, you don’t need to. The beat is amazing and it’s catchy, so if you don’t speak any Spanish, no worries: you’ll still catch yourself singing, though it’ll be gibberish. Kinda like when you sing “Gasolina” by Daddy Yankee.
2. Jason Derulo ft. Ty Dolla $ign and Nicki Minaj- “Swalla”
We can always count on Jason Derulo to give us at least one bop for the summer. His new song, “Swalla,” features Ty Dolla $ign, who seems to be everywhere since his feature on Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home,” and the “Queen of Rap” herself Nicki Minaj. The song not only has a catchy chorus but Nicki’s verse is pretty good and Ty does what he does best, adding a little something to the song.
3. Migos – “T-Shirt”
Honestly, Migos did it again. “T-Shirt” is the second single off their new album, Culture, and it’s just as catchy and good as “Bad and Boujee.” The great thing about this one track is that we don’t have to hear Lil Uzi Vert say, “Yeah yeah yeah” 20 times. This definitely one of the songs you want to have on any playlist.
4. Zara Larsson- “So Good”
Zara Larsson has been on a roll with the hits and she has not slowed up. The Swedish popstar’s newest single, “So Good,” off of her album of the same name, is one of the best R&B/pop releases this year. Ty Dolla $ign is here yet again and adds a bit of soul to the track. The 2000s R&B vibe of the song will pull you in and you’ll catch yourself singing it 24/7.
5. Little Mix -“Touch”
The ladies of Little Mix might have finally found their US hit – let’s cross our fingers. Ignore the other version they sent to radio that features Kid Ink; the original is much better. The chorus is insane, the production is amazing and the vocals are on point as always. If this song isn’t on your playlist then what is? One last thing, Leigh-Anne and Jade: go solo.
6. Bruno Mars – “That’s What I Like”
Okay brace yourself: Bruno is the best male artist out right now, period. His latest single, “That’s What I Like,” is honestly one of the best recent R&B tracks released by a male artist, and get this, he’s actually singing. If you like the 90/80s R&B feel of his newest album then this track should be #1 on your spring break playlist. One more thing, is anyone else wondering who Julio is?
7. Bebe Rexha ft. G-Eazy – “F.F.F.”
Plan on getting away from all of the fakes in your life? Bebe Rexha has you covered. Her newest single “F.F.F” aka “F**k Fake Friends” is the perfect anthem for this spring break. Blast in the car on the way to beach; actually, blast it at the beach as well. G-Eazy’s flow fits really well with the song and he actually gets pretty deep in his verse. If you loved them on “Me, Myself and I,” then you’ll love them on “F.F.F.”
8. Fifth Harmony ft. Fetty Wap – “All in My Head”
You know what, I’m about to say it: I don’t care that this came out last May. “All in My Head” by Fifth harmony was the song of the summer then (VMA award to prove it) and it’s the song of spring break now. The song is so catchy – then again, maybe that’s because it just repeats itself – but the beat makes you feel good and Fetty Wap adds what only Fetty can add. The song will be stuck in your head and somehow you’ll memorize Fetty Wap’s mumble, making it definitely a bop for the playlist.
9. G-Eazy & Kehlani – “Good Life”
This is the second time these two have teamed up, and it’s the second time they have not disappointed. Taken from the soundtrack for the upcoming The Fate of the Furious, this song is not only a bop but also an anthem. While G-Eazy kills his verses, Kehlani makes sure to pull you in by killing the hook and the chorus. Not only is this a perfect song for spring break, but I smell a future Top 20 hit for these two.
10. Kygo, Selena Gomez – “It Ain’t Me”
Okay, I’ll be the first to say that in the vocals department, Selena Gomez isn’t the best. However, just like Britney Spears, she has some great music. Thank to an amazing DJ and collaborator in Kygo, the production is amazing and the beat drop is one of the best I’ve heard in awhile. If you’re looking for the perfect pop song to jam to, this is it.
