Every year the BET Awards take place and every year we are for the most part, entertained. The BET Awards are known for a lot, recognizing black entertainers for their work, fun and energetic performances, and as a huge family reunion for black twitter.
This year’s award show was full of some of the best and most anticipated moments, from the performances to the acceptance speeches BET made sure to deliver. With so many moments it may be hard to figure out which were the best, no worries, I have the list down below in no particular order.
Bruno Mars’ Show Stopping Opening
Bruno Mars opened up the show the only way Bruno Mars could. He finally debuted the song “Perm” from his latest album, on an award stage and it set the tone for the night. With high energy, fast choreography and killer vocals, Bruno Mars proved that he is THE BEST male performer this decade. The crowd was up on their feet and cheering through the entire performance. It was definitely one of the highlights of the night.
Xscape Reunion
Earlier in the year when Xscape(Tameka, LaTocha, Tiny and Kandi) announced their return, fans were ecstatic. Not only did they announce they would be performing at the Essence Festival but they also announced they would be performing at the BET Awards. They did a medley of some of their most known hits including “Understanding” and “Who Can I Run To” and while they didn’t perform “My Little Secret,” No one in the audience cared because they were too busy feeling the nostalgia. Xscape proved why they were such a force when it came to R&B groups. Fun Fact, every album Xscape released went at least Platinum.
Chance The Rapper Receives the Humanitarian Award
One of the most amazing moments of the show came when Chance the Rapper was honored with the, Humanitarian Award, for his philanthropy in Chicago. While Common, Jesse Williams and more talked about how he was inspiring and talked about all the good he has done, one special guest made it even more special. Michelle Obama (our first lady foreva) came on screen to thank Chance and honor him for his contributions, which made everything even better.
Migos and Post Malone Perform
Migos have had one hell of a year and they put all of their hits into one performance at this year’s BET Awards. Post Malone started out the performance performing the hit “Congratulations” which features Migos member Quavo. After the performance, Offset and Takeoff joined Quavo on the stage to perform “T-Shirt” and “Bad and Boujee.” The performance was one of the most entertaining and hype performances of the night. With backup dancers doing excellent choreography and the crowd singing along to every word. It was definitely a highlight.
New Edition Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award
Ever since The New Edition movie aired on BET, there has been nothing but praise for the group which is much deserved. This year BET honored the group with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and it it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving group. After being honored the cast from the biopic performed to honor the actual band and then the greatest moment was when the cast and the band performed on stage together. It was a treat for everyone watching.
SZA BET Awards Debut Performance
SZA has been riding high on the success of her debut album CTRL. When BET announced she would be performing on the award show, fans went crazy and though they kept us waiting all night, and made us suffer through technical difficulties, the performance was worth it. Performing fan favorites “The Weekend” and “Love Galore,” SZA had everyone in the audience on their feet feeling every word she sang, just look at Keyshia Cole. If you wanna see any highlight from last night’s show definitely check this out.
Big Sean Brings the Moves
Big Sean has always been a pretty competent rapper and performer, but at the 2017 BET Awards he showed us something different. For his performance, Big Sean performed a medley of hits from his latest album I Decided including “Bounce Back” and “Moves.” For his performance, Big Sean used visuals similar to Beyonce’s Superbowl and BBMAs performance which made it even better. He also had a bit of choreography which was cool to see, seeing as how many rapper normally just hop around on stage. He definitely raised the bar when it came to Hip Hop performances.
