Every week of programing we will be highlighting the Black Squirrel Radio Show of the Week
This week’s show is The Cave
The Cave airs every Friday from 8pm to 10pm. Host Sydney Cohen has been with Black Squirrel Radio since Spring 2014. Sydney is not only a DJ but is also BSR’s resident Mobile DJ Director, helping to bring music to events all over the area. But with her show, The Cave, Sydney also does live mixes in the studio, playing lots of different genres from all over the world!
Describe your show:
Sydney: Each week I mix live in the studio, playing anything from dancehall to Dilla beats to Korean hip hop and other music from all over the world. Just about the music, no small talk (most times, sometimes).
How did you come up with your show concept:
Sydney: My first radio show Space Junk focused mostly on electronic music, but I wanted The Cave to to cover a wider range of music.
What do you do in your free time:
Sydney: Mine the web for music, watch documentaries, argue with my cat Raja, probably argue with myself about the patriarchy.
Who are some of your favorite bands/artists:
Sydney: Ivan Ave, Anderson. Paak, Kaytranada, James Blake, Goldlink
What is your favorite BSR memory:
Sydney: When I DJed the robotics competition last year, it was 8 hours long, but the kids were adorable and SUPER hyped about the music and the competition.
What do you hope your BSR legacy is:
Sydney: Best Mobile DJ in BSR History
If you could DJ any event what would it be and why:
Sydney: Cakeshop in Itaewon, Seoul because it’s this very small underground (literally) bar/venue in an up and coming music scene. Way more of a hip/intimate scene. It’s like the diamond in the rough of clean and pretty Seoul. The crowd is much more receptive and has this sense of raw energy unparalleled to any other intimate venue I’ve been to. They don’t care about lyrics, they just like music and want to dance.
