Just in time for Halloween, the 80’s mass murderer is back! Chucky, the killer doll, is ready to wreak havoc. Don Mancini has brought back his good guy doll into a more thrilling and gruesome movie with a hint of light humor.
“The Cult of Chucky” follows the events of the last installment, “The Curse of Chucky.” For those who haven’t seen the movie, Chucky basically killed a whole family except for one person, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif, the daughter of Brad Dourif), who was then accused of the murder of her family and was sent to a mental institution.
Voiced by Brad Dourif, Chucky is a man named Charles Lee Ray, a mass murderer who was shot down in a toy store back in the 1980’s. Charles then put his soul into a kid’s toy, called a good guy doll. During his time as a doll, he has terrorized a young boy named Andy (Alex Vincent) in the first three movies and killing important people in Andy’s life.
Once it got to the “The Bride of Chucky,” Chucky went and terrorized his ex-girlfriend, Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly), put her soul into a doll and roped these two love-struck teenagers into running away together and taking the dolls to Charles grave to get a amulet, in which at the end Chucky and Tiffany have a baby.
In the sequel “The Seed of Chucky,” Chucky and Tiffany end up in Hollywood and meet their son, Glenn, who found them on a set for a movie that Jennifer Tilly was acting in. They end up terrorizing Tilly and get her pregnant with fraternal twins. Soon after, their son is confused on whether if he is a boy or girl and wants to be called Glen or Glenda throughout the movie. In the end, Chucky dies, but claims he will be back. Tiffany transfers her soul into Jennifer Tilly’s body while Glen’s soul gets sucked into the baby boy. Unlike the gruesome “The Bride of Chucky” and “The Seed of Chucky,” “The Cult of Chucky” consists of bloody deaths, mental illnesses and Chucky’s smart remarks after killing his victims.
The movie brings back five returning cast member who were in the last six installments: Brad Dourif, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly and Summer H. Howell. It’s amazing that Alex Vincent’s character (Andy) is back because you never really knew what happened to him when he got older. It turns out he had kept Chucky’s head attached to a nail on a board and has been torturing him for what he did to him as a child.
When Chucky shows up at the institute that Nica Pierce is admitted to, the movie got confusing because I wasn’t sure how he got there, considering he was decapitated by Andy. Later on in the film more good guy dolls show up in the institute and you realize that Chucky’s soul is in all of the dolls!
Overall the movie was better than “The Bride of Chucky” and “The Seed of Chucky” and is finally back on track of being a horror film like how it first started off in “Child’s Play.”
