Album Review: The Dead Weather "Horehound"
Album Reviews

 Brittany Nader | BSR Music

Rock and roll has introduced the world to many notable "supergroups," such as Journey, Audioslave and Transplants. In an age where many believe rock music to be on the decline, one powerhouse has proven himself, time and time again, to break the barriers of negativity and revitalize modern music. By joining forces with a few of today’s freshest musicians, Jack White, the mastermind behind The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, has risen again with an electrifying new project called The Dead Weather. Teaming up with fellow Raconteur Jack Lawrence, Queens of the Stone Age’s Dean Fertita and Alison Mosshart of The Kills, White’s little project has evolved into modern rock’s greatest jam session. With their debut album, Horehound, The Dead Weather is shaking things up and shooting down preconceived notions about modern rock with their versatile style and undisputed edge.

Album Review: U2 "No Line On The Horizon"
Album Reviews

Spenser Etzel | BSR Music

U2's new album, No Line on the Horizon, is an album of near perfection. The first track opens with Bono chanting the optimistic words, "no line on the horizon," while the Edge wails on his guitar as if to say, "we're back and we're not going anywhere."

"Get on Your Boots" sounds like it could be an extra song on the critically acclaimed Achtung Baby, with a dance-like beat that would make even an older audience want to get up and dance. "Fez-Being Born" opens with a quiet, mysterious sound that jumps into a riff resembling the song "Bad." On, "I was being born/a bleeding start," Bono affirms that even if he was lying, you would have to believe him. Like its beginning, the album ends on a high note with the incredible track "Cedars of Lebanon". The quiet drums compliment Bono's deep, dark voice through this finale.

Album Review: The Mars Volta "Octahedron"
Album Reviews

Image Courtsey Warner Bros. Records

 Jeremy Brading | BSR Music

The Mars Volta has just released a new studio record. Don’t get too excited though, because it is not really worth checking out. If the band decided to hand out free copies of this record and you somehow managed to score one, I still would not suggest listening to it.

The Mars Volta's latest studio endeavor is entitled, Octahedron. I am still unsure why this record is named for a strange-looking geometric figure. Aside from having a peculiar name, the record itself only has eight songs! Making your fans pay full price for eight songs is simply highway robbery.

Jen Ruper | BSR Music

Matt and Kim’s second full length album, Grand has generated a definite buzz in the music community. This indie-pop duo from Brooklyn uses simple beats to create catchy songs that easily get stuck in your head.

The two have been making music since meeting in 2004 while teaching at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. They performed at Lollapalooza in 2007 and the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2008, both hosted in Chicago. With their second LP, the energetic pair sticks to their DIY roots that combines dance rhythms and beats to create a fun and catchy album. The first single, “Daylight” landed a spot on the Billboard Top 100 and was featured in a TV commercial for Bacardi Rum.

Academics vs. Athletics
Kent State Sports

Eric Ristow | Black Squirrel Radio News

The 2009 Kent State football recruiting class is rated best in the MAC by Rivals.com.  On the academic side of things, the athletes test scores are far lower than other incoming freshman.  This leads to the question, what’s more important to the University Academics or Athletics?
